PISANG PEAK CLIMB Overview

Where walk leads from low warm country to cooler green rolling hills and towards an arctic zone of ice and glaciers.

A marvelous adventure around scenic Manang Valley on the backside of massive Annapurna Himalaya to the summit of Pisang Peak.

Pisang Peak a lofty-looking mountain rises at the height of 6,091 m and 19,984 feet high. The peak stands high above Pisang village within Manang Valley close to the high ridges of Chulu’s group of peaks. Pisang Peak is situated close to Damodar Himal range towards the north, a striking peak looking from Pisang village and Manang valley.

Of all trekking peaks listed in NMA (Nepal Mountaineering Association) Pisang Peak is less climbed due to its technical difficulties. The climb of Pisang Peak is classified as PD + (Per Difficule), the grading from the French / Swiss Alpine Climbing System. A straightforward climb with some technical effort to negotiate, climbing on ice, and snow with a steep ascent to the summit.

Pisang Peak was first climbed solo by German mountaineer J. Wellenkamp in 1955 using the South-West Route. Since then the peak is often climbed by interested climbers every year in good season, offers great climbing skills.

Pisang Peak Trek & Climb begins with an exciting drive heading Nepal Mid-West on the main highway towards Lamjung district. As the journey continues following Masrsyangdi River past the large town of Besisar around warm low farm areas.

Drive leads on winding uphill to cooler hill past Syange, Jagat, and Tal Besi reaching at Dharapani village. From here onward within the district of Manang, a lovely village, located on route to Manaslu and Annapurna circuit.

After overnight in a nice lodge, the walk starts from Dharapani towards Chame, a large town and headquarter of the Manang district. The adventure continues following Masrsyangdi River through beautiful woodland of tall rhododendron and pine trees. On leaving the river a short climb to a high ridge with the first glimpse of stunning view of Pisang Peak. The walk follows downhill to Pisang village for the last overnight in the comfort of a cozy lodge.

At Pisang village having a rest day for acclimatization as well as for a short hike around this windswept picturesque valley. Pisang village, situated right beneath Pisang Peak with Annapurna II-A-III in the south, enjoy the day exploring the village.

From Pisang village, our main adventure begins with a climb past upper Pisang village and farmland towards a high ridge. Here our base camp is established for Pisang Peak climb, setting our first tented camp above Manang valley.

The base camp offers a grand vista of giant snow peaks that surrounds our base camp on a high ridge. Our camp is located close beneath staggering Pisang Peak on a Kharka, a yak pasture grazing field at 4,380 m high.

Full preparation at base camp and then adding one more camp to make the climb much accessible setting High Camp. Right beneath South-West Ridge at 5,400 m right at the bottom of Pisang Peak, with time here for practice climb.

The final day of the adventure leads to a well-defined ridge leads to the snow slope, with some technical section to negotiate. As climb progress with the last haul to a steep up to the summit of Pisang Peak without much difficulty.

Feeling on top of the world, enjoy a stunning breath-taking panorama of a snow mountain range that surrounds you. After a great triumph descent on the same route towards base camp, for last overnight in tented camp.

After a great victory reaching safely on top of Pisang Peak, the rest of the walk is easy to Manang village. On route visit the Braga Monastery of great cultural and religious interest, one of the oldest Gompa around Manang area.

The adventure continues after spending overnight at a nice Manang village enriched with an age-old culture of Buddhism, heading towards high Thorang-La Pass.

On leaving Manang village walk on the main route of the famous and popular Annapurna circuit trail to the base of Thorang-La. Next morning climb on winding uphill to the top of Thorang-La at 5,416 m high. The pass marked with prayers flags also forms a boundary between Manang and Mustang districts.

Enjoy the sweeping panorama of high snow-clad peaks and then head downhill towards Muktinath around the Mustang area. Muktinath is a holy pilgrimage site for Hindu as well as for some Buddhism followers, facing grand views of Dhaulagiri Himalaya. From Muktinath down towards Kaligandaki River valley to Jomsom, the headquarter town of Mustang district, here our treks concludes.

Next early morning a scenic, short flight to Pokhara a beautiful city in the close shadow of massive Annapurna Himalaya. From Pokhara, then back to Kathmandu to complete our memorable adventure of great experience on Pisang Peak Trek & Climb.

Best seasons for Pisang Peak Trek & Climb:

The best time for this wonderful adventure is in the spring and autumn seasons, from March to May, and autumn/fall begins from September to November months.

Springtime from March to May will be much lively with wildflowers in seasonal bloom, especially the magnolia and rhododendrons the national flower of Nepal.

March to May fine clear day most of the time, with longer sun-light hours but can get overcast in the late afternoon with chances of snow sometimes on high altitude areas as well on passes. Autumn / Falls another best time for this trek with a fine clear day for views and walks. But days are shorter with sun-light hours, morning, late afternoon, and nighttime temperatures drop to freezing cold around the higher region with the bright starry night sky. Chances of snow on trails as well on passes.

Religion and Culture:

North Mid-West Nepal around Manang and Mustang districts populated by Bhotia and Manang people the mountain tribes. The native around high Manang and Mustang follows strong Buddhism religion of age-old culture similar to their predecessors Tibetan, on this trek will notice traditionally built houses, where every home is adorned with Buddhist prayer flags and religious monuments.

On this trek beyond Dharapani village, coming across rows of prayer walls, spinning and wheeled prayer with Buddhist stupas, where walking clockwise will be the right way to respect the local culture as well visit interesting monasteries.

Checking your lovely room, and after a refreshing rest join with other members of
Pisang Peak Trek & Climb. Our guide or group leader brief you about the treks, do’s and don’ts, local culture, as well camping, foods and of lodges, camping on route trek.

A full good information which will help to enjoy your adventure with us, followed with welcome group dinner in a Nepalese restaurant with folk-culture program as entertainment while you enjoy the dinner.

Morning after breakfast at given time, our city guide will meet for interesting sightseeing of best world heritage sites around Kathmandu.

Tour includes old Durbar (royal palace and courtyard) square, with Temple of Kumari (Living young virgin Goddess). Visit famous Nepal landmark Swayambhunath Stupa a 2,500 years old, a Buddhist Stupa with all seeing eyes of Lord Buddha. Afternoon tour of holy Hindu Temple of Pashupatinath and visit Bouddhanath, Asia’s largest Stupa with four cardinals eyes of Buddha surrounded with prayer wheels and small market, this place is also known as Little Tibet due to strong Tibetan influence.

After an exciting day tour back to hotel for trek and climb preparation with last minute briefing from your leader and guide.

Start the morning with long exciting drive to Dharapani our starting point of the adventure to Nar-Phu and Upper Mustang, starts with pleasant downhill through tree lines to Tilje village, a nice spot by the raging Masrsyangdi River, having short rest or possible for lunch stop, then climb on crossing a suspension bridge to a large and nice lovely Dharapani village.
This village located on the junction of famous, popular Annapurna Circuit trail and route of Manaslu. Dharapani village where motorable road has reached from Besisar town as far to Manang village.

From Dharapani walk into a nice rhododendron and pine forest past villages of Bagarchap and Danque a place with apple orchard on the backyard, then route leads to a steep climb reaching Timang village for lunch stop facing views of
Mt. Manaslu and Lamjung Himal. From Timang village few hours trek leads to Koto and then end the day walk on reaching Chame town for overnight halt, Chame a large and major town and headquarter of Manang district.

After an enjoyable overnight at Chame, morning starts to cross Masrsyangdi River following a pleasant trail within cool shade of lovely forest of tall pine and rhododendron trees.
As walk continues to Bhratang village, and then over a bridge with short climb to a ridge at Dukari Pokhari a small settlement with few nice lodge and restaurants.
A nice lunch spot with views of Annapurna, Chulu and Pisang peaks.
After a refreshing stop, walk continues on downhill to a flat valley reaching at Pisang village for overnight stop. From here onward within Manang valley, the village located below stunning Pisang Peak.

Rest day in Pisang village for necessary acclimatization before heading towards higher terrain for Pisang Peak climb. A free day to relax and for short hike around, walk to upper Pisang village and visit the monastery, offers grand views of surrounding snow peaks. Rest of the day check the climbing gear as well our guide provides necessary information of the area, culture, religion and climbing skill required for the climb.

After a pleasant rest day at Pisang village, morning after breakfast leaving the village behind for sheer mountain wilderness. As route leads north above Manang valley, as tree lines gives away for short bushes around high Yak grazing pasture land, called Kharka. Where our base camp is set for the climb close to towering Pisang Peak. A steep climb for whole morning till mid-afternoon to establish our base camp with full camping equipment’s at 4,380 meters high, out first night in tents meals prepared by our expert cook and kitchen staff.

From the base camp taking minimum gear just for the climb, as walk leads to a ridgeline heading towards east right beneath staggering Pisang Peak.
After a good steady climb following a faint path where few climbers and Yak herders seldom walk on this trail around, climb over rocks, ice and glacier to reach the bottom of Pisang Peak. Where high camp is set for the climb, rest of the afternoon enjoy the view and preparation for the climb.
Afternoon our guide will scout the area for safe accessible route to the summit fixing ropes and making ice ledges where necessary, High Camp situated on long ridge of Pisang Peak, under some conditions this area may be under snow, afternoon free to sort the gear with preparation for the early morning climb.

Another rest day for acclimatization as well for final preparation and checking the equipment for the next day climb to the summit of Pisang peak. Our guide will brief regarding the climb as well with technical difficulties on some section to reach the summit of Pisang Peak.

Our Big Day of the adventure and major highlight starts early morning before crack of dawn, after final preparation follow our lead guide. Where route leads over moraine and rubble of ice falls, following above on a well-defined ridge towards the last snow slope. Adventure continues with climb on steep rocky and icy ledge as climb leads to overcome some technical sections and then the last big haul to the summit of Pisang Peak. On reaching the top having rest then enjoy stunning panorama of massif Annapurna Himalaya with surrounding close peaks of Chulu range, includes view of Damodar Himal as far towards Mt. Manaslu in the east horizon.
After a great success feeling on top of the world at 6,091 m and 19,984 feet. A slow descent on the same route towards base camp for last overnight in tented camp.

We reserve an extra day as contingency in case of unfavorable weather condition, or to adjust this day to maintain itinerary days taking care of client’s health and fitness as well. If this spare day not used as per our standard itinerary our guide / leader will use this extra day on return trek to Manang or on route to Jomsom, making the day shorter with enjoyable walks.

Enjoy leisure morning facing views of Pisang and Chulu peaks with
Annapurna IV and II, after breakfast start the morning walk downhill to Hongde, a
village with a small airstrip. From here walk on nice level path to Manang village,
an hour before Manang visit an old Braga monastery an interesting place
enriched with old relics of Buddha and famous gurus.

From the Monastery enjoy views of Annapurna and Chulu Himal range. From here
short walk to main Manang village for overnight stop. Afternoon at leisure or tour
of the village, where most houses are built in Tibetan tradition, the local native of
Manang migrated from Tibet more than 400 years back, as you can notice colorful
culture and custom similar to Tibetans.

From Khangsar back on the main trail towards Thorang-La, as walk leads to Ghunsang a small settlement, where route of Manang village joins.
Adventure continues on scenic uphill path, facing view of high snow-capped peaks then end the walk on reaching at Yak Kharka for overnight stop.
A small settlement with number of nice lodges, situated on a wide grazing pasture for Yaks and other cattle. From Yak Kharka facing grand view of Chulu West, Gangapurna and Tilicho peaks.

A short day walk, morning starts on pleasant path to Ledar a place with good lodges. From here on gradual winding trail, then down to a stream with short climb above a stream, as walk continues on gentle path to Thorang Phedi.
Phedi, bottom of the pass or a hill, stopping here for short rest and then end the day with an hour steep climb to Thorang High Camp for lunch and overnight halt.

Today the final big day of the adventure, start the morning having early breakfast walk begins on level winding path, and then climb on undulating winding up towards Thorang-La Pass, the highest spot of the adventure at 5,416 m / 17,700 feet high. The top festooned with thousands of Buddhist colorful prayer flags.
Enjoy the panorama of Chulu peaks with Damodar Himal, includes views of Annapurna Himalaya and Dhaulagiri Mountain range. From the top a long descend to the bottom at another Phedi within Mustang district.
Having short rest or enjoy lunch break at Phedi with few small tea-house and restaurants. Afternoon a slow gradual walk to Muktinath at the height of 3,800 m for overnight stop. A holy spot for all Hindus, the word Muktinath means
‘Liberation’ to be free from life cycle. At Muktinath transfer into one of its nice lodge with time for short tour of Muktinath holy complex, facing excellent views of Tilicho, Nilgiri and Dhaulagiri mountain range.

Last day and short walk of the adventure to Jomsom town, morning walk leads downhill to a flat plain of Kaligandaki River valley, as walk continues on a river bed then ending our trek at Jomsom. A big town with many excellent lodge, hotels and inns for overnight stop with fancy restaurants and fresh bakeries.

Morning a short walk to Jomsom airport for scenic short flight to reach at beautiful Pokhara, during air fantastic views of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna Himalayan peaks, as the aircraft lands at Pokhara. Pokhara one of the most sought touristic destinations in all Himalaya, a picturesque city overlooking views of massive Annapurna Himalaya with famous and magnificent Machhapuchare Himal ‘Fish Tail’. From the airport a short drive to reach hotels by serene Phewa Lake side, with time to explore beautiful Pokhara.

Morning catching last views of Annapurna Himalaya with majestic Machhapuchare Himal or Fish Tail, and then transfer to Pokhara airport for smooth short flight to Kathmandu. Back within the hustle and bustle city life of Kathmandu after a great adventure and wonderful experience around Annapurna & Tilicho Lake Trekking. Rest of the day at leisure for individual activities and shopping souvenirs or join in for short tour around places of great interest.

After a great adventure around Annapurna Himalaya and Manang area with climb of Pisang Peak. A free day to relax as well for individual activities and shopping souvenirs, as well to submit report of the climb to respective Government Tourism Department.

Last day in Nepal as per your international flight time, our staff and guide transfer you to the airport for homeward bound. After a great time and adventure on Pisang Peak Trek & Climb around Annapurna Himalaya range.

  • Pisang Peak is separate from Chulu’s as an isolated dome-shaped peak.
    Situated east of the Chulu group of peaks above Manang Valley and on top of Pisang village at the height of 6,091 m and 19,984 feet high. Pisang Peak also known as Jong-Ri is better known as Pisang Peak due to its location.

  • From Pisang village reaching Pisang Peak base camp at 4,380 m having
    Acclimatization day, then setting High Camp at 5,400 m to make the climb shorter
    and more accessible. Total 3 days to reach the summit of Pisang Peak from the base
    camp, with acclimatization and having Advance Camp.

  • On reaching Dharapani village from Kathmandu via Besar town, it will be on
    a lodge or Tea-House basis. From Dharapani to Pisang village, after Pisang village
    staying in a tented camp for 4 days before and after the climb.
    Return journey overnights in lodges till Jomsom town is reached at Manang

  • The camping facilities provided by Brown Bear Trail with excellent two-man tents
    made for high altitude. Backed by kitchen unit of cook, kitchen staff, climbing
